Innovating technology in the Library

Posted on November 2nd, 2010 by Paul Stainthorp

Innovation by Vermin Inc on FlickrI recently chaired the first meeting of a new ‘Library Innovation Group’ for the University.

Here are its terms of reference.

We’re hoping that this new group will be a bit more lively than its predecessor (which had got a bit stale and reactive through overfamiliarity, and which wasn’t very accountable to users or even to other Library staff).

We’re intending, rather than receiving long, dry reports from the various Library systems projects, to use the meetings of the new group to brainstorm problems that are affecting our users, to propose solutions and kickstart development and corrective work, and to keep abreast of the changing technological base of the University. We’ll also blog the activities of the group, which is something that didn’t really happen in the past.

Four’s a crowd

I’ve all of a sudden found myself ‘in charge’ of a team, which is both gratifying and a little bit scary.

@evarol joined me today in the brand-new post of Library (E-resources) Assistant. The other two posts in the Library’s nascent E-resources Team both relate to the management and advocacy of the University’s Repository. I then report to one of two Deputy Librarians; they in turn to the University Librarian. There’s nothing like a good hierarchy to keep the biblioentropy in check.

Here’s a diagram showing how we fit together; as a courtesy to my other colleagues I’ve not named them (though you could probably work out the entire structure of the University using only public sources)…

September already?

<Wilhelm scream>: it’s student induction season in the Fens again.

Library induction presentation for new students beginning foundation degrees (FdSc Food Manufacture / FdSc Agriculture & Environment) at the University of Lincoln’s National Centre for Food Manufacturing, Holbeach Campus, south Lincolnshire: September 2010.

(Explanation: even though I haven’t really been a subject librarian for a couple of years, I’ve kept up my relationship with the National Centre for Food Manufacturing in Holbeach. I’ve spent a bit of time this summer working with colleagues to improve the University of Lincoln’s small campus library there. Next week’s will be an interesting induction: for the first time, all of the students beginning foundation and full undergraduate degrees this year will be studying via distance learning online.)

Old site, new site

Screenshot of a page from my old websiteI’ve decided to start maintaining again my personal website, mainly as a register of all the little bits of work I get involved in. This does mean it might not always make fascinating reading (unless you’re transfixed by digital library management and development…), but at least I’ll have a permanent record of things to refer back to.

My original website was a series of plain HTML documents; now instead of maintaining my own installation of WordPress I’m using the University of Lincoln’s (i.e. my employer’s) WordPress MU / BuddyPress server at blogs.lincoln.ac.uk, but mapped to my own domain. This way I can participate in the social-networking features of BuddyPress, while still maintaining my own, personal online presence outside the University.
