You can search and view more than 3 million documents available through the IEEE Xplore digital library, which provides access to the world’s highest quality technical literature in engineering and technology. (The IEEE Xplore platform also provides access to a small number of additional journal subscriptions for engineering, as well as the full text of the VDE VERLAG Conference Proceedings.)

University of Lincoln students and staff can access IEEE Xplore via the University Portal, at:

If you’ve not used the IEEE Xplore platform before, there’s an online help site, self-paced tutorials, and individual user guides – alternatively, contact your subject librarian for advice.

New help guides for RefWorks 2.0

Posted on October 21st, 2011 by Paul Stainthorp

RefWorks have released a load of new help material in preparation for the final move to RefWorks 2.0.

Links to RefWorks help material on the Portal have been updated.

Remember that RefWorks 2.0 becomes the ‘default’ version of RefWorks after the 29th of October, and that the old ‘classic’ RefWorks will be switched off entirely at the end of 2011.

Screenshot of RefWorks(If you haven’t tried the new version yet, you can take a look at it by logging in to RefWorks, then clicking on the ‘RefWorks 2.0′ link in the top right-hand corner of the screen.)

For help with using RefWorks, please email: RefWorks@lincoln.ac.uk

JSTOR access problems – alternative login method

Posted on October 13th, 2011 by Paul Stainthorp

A few people are having problems accessing JSTOR in the usual way through the University Portal.

While we get to the bottom of the problem, you might like to use this alternative method of access to JSTOR, at the following address:

Log in using your network\accountID and password.

(Technical note: this alternative method of access uses LibResProxy, a CGI proxy application which mimics IP-based on-campus authentication. It will be slower than normal access, and not all features of the database may be available.)

Athens access problems solved / planned downtime

Posted on September 28th, 2011 by Paul Stainthorp

This morning’s problems with Athens access to electronic library resources have been solved.

All e-resources that use Athens should now be working OK. Here are some tips on logging in to library resources via Athens.

To ensure that this problem doesn’t happen again, we’re going to have to carry out some maintenance to Athens on Tuesday, 11 October 2011, at 08.30 am.

Athens access to e-resources will be unavailable for up to 15 minutes at that time.

This will affect access to:

  • All e-books
  • Nearly all e-journals
  • Some electronic databases
  • Digimap
  • RefWorks
  • etc.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused by this necessary maintenance.

Moving to RefWorks 2.0 – October 2011

Posted on September 26th, 2011 by Paul Stainthorp

Since an initial preview in 2009 and a public launch in May last year, users of the personal reference/bibliography management tool RefWorks have had the option to try out a new RefWorks 2.0 interface, in addition to the familiar, ‘Classic’ version of RefWorks.

(If you haven’t tried the new version yet, you can take a look at it by logging in to RefWorks, then clicking on the ‘RefWorks 2.0′ link in the top right-hand corner of the screen.)

Now, RefWorks have announced that RefWorks ‘Classic’ is to be phased out by the end of 2011.

  • On 29 October 2011, RefWorks 2.0 will become the default view of RefWorks (with the option to switch back to RefWorks Classic if you still want to)
  • On or around 31 December 2011, RefWorks Classic will be switched off for good.

Goodbye old RefWorks…

…hello new RefWorks!

Here are some useful links for getting to grips with RefWorks 2.0:

RefWorks have also announced that they’ll shortly be releasing a new version of the Write-N-Cite software for Windows and Mac, to go with RefWorks 2.0. (“Until then… Write-N-Cite remains available, and is fully compatible with the RefWorks 2.0 interface.“)

If you have any questions about RefWorks in general or the move to version 2.0 in particular, please email RefWorks@lincoln.ac.uk
